Backsliding…Don’t Make This Mistake In Your Business!
Have you ever experienced this phenomenon? You set a goal, let’s say to double the sales in your business within a year. The first day, you’re all in. You write up a marketing plan and get straight to work. You are motivated and going places!
The first month, you execute everything and then some. Sales start going up! You give yourself a pat on the back knowing that If you keep this up, you’ll crush your goal in no time!
You stick with it, through the ups and downs, and actually reach your goal faster than you anticipated! Hooray!!
And then you start skipping days. But who can blame you? Sales are up. You deserve to take a break. Your focus starts to wander. You get wrapped up in several unrelated projects. You’re spending less time on growing your business, and more time on things like branding, strategic partnerships, operations, client/customer service, and the wide range of tasks that catch your attention.
And before you know it, sales start to slip again.
I’ll be the first to admit it, I’ve been there. I think it’s human nature to fall back into old habits from time to time.
The key is to recognize when your discipline is slipping, and have a plan to get back on track!
If you find yourself in this position, here are a few quick tips to help:
The moment you notice that you’ve started slipping, take one action toward your goal. Once you’ve completed that action, take another step. The idea here is to create positive momentum. It is natural to miss a day, or have an off week. But don’t make it a habit. You can break the negative streak by taking immediate positive action.
Review your goals and your action plan to make sure that you know exactly what action you need to take tomorrow, and the rest of the week, to get back on track.
Review your goals daily. Make it part of your morning or going-to-bed routine. When you see it regularly, you are more likely to do it regularly.
Be sure to share your goals with your business coach, mentor, and/or accountability partner regularly so your tribe can provide support and help hold you accountable.
Finally, I want to remind you to be kind to yourself. We are all human. Instead of aiming for perfection, aim to be just a little bit better today than you were yesterday.
Cheers to your success!
